Being A Member

When you join the Butler Society, you belong to a worldwide “one-name” Society, not a “one-family” Society.

It is good for us to have a sense of belonging. A sense of roots. A place where we can grow and discover more of our individual and collective histories, together. And a place where we build friendships and familial ties across the ages and around the world.

Members, who come from more than 15 countries, are connected via our website and country Branches, and through the triennial soft cover Journal of The Butler Society together with our quarterly newsletter and updates. Our Facebook Group has been growing apace, with more avenues opening in social media as we build our operational capacity.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Butler family history and genealogy. Our membership comprises individuals with the surname Butler, and the many branches of the family name, and their kith and kin, unconditionally.

We preserve the Butler family manuscripts, records and traditions through stewardship of those manuscripts owned by the Society as well as sharing knowledge and encouraging original research.

We unite members through meetings ranging from Australia and New Zealand to Canada & the USA, And from Germany, Spain and the UK to name but a few.

Every 3 years, we hold our Triennial Gathering based at Kilkenny Castle, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.
